We recently completed a James Hardie siding project in Lees Summit Missouri and wanted to share some feedback on one of the siding projects we used. At Monarch Exteriors KC we have over 9 years experience working for James Hardie and part of my responsibility was training installers on how to install James Hardie products. During my career, I was familiar with a company called WoodTone that bought James Hardie materials and then painted it at their facility using their application process. The thing that is unique about WoodTone is the color variety that they have. If you want a stained looking James Hardie product then WoodTone is about your only option. As far as cost is concerned, James Hardie shingle is expensive in and of itself and WoodTone James Hardie Shingle is about twice as expensive as regular James Hardie Colorplus. So most of us aren’t going to be able to side their whole house using these products but including it as an accent like we did on this project can make your house look like your dream house!
WoodTone RusticSeries Shake comes in 18 different colors and is available in three different substrates. James Hardie Fiber Cement, Allura Fiber Cement and LP Engineered Wood products. RusticSeriesTM aims to replicate the natural beauty and warmth of real wood siding, while still preserving the strength and durability of composite products. Just like real wood siding, each substrate and profile of RusticSeries will vary in terms of grain pattern and color. So it is important to view an actual sample of the product before making the decision on which color to go with. One of the local suppliers in Kansas City stocks 4 different colors so we keep a stockpile of sample pieces to be able to show our clients.
The WoodTone product comes with a 20 Year warranty that covers the finish of the product. That warranty is in conjunction with James Hardies, Allura, LPs manufacturer substrate warranty. For this project we used James Hardie siding because it is hands down the best siding on the market and it’s not even close, so the siding has a 30 Year non prorated warranty that is transferable one time to the next homeowner.
The installation best practices are the exact same as any other James Hardie product so we didn’t have to do anything special. The caulk matching is a little different but Woodtone recommends a couple different manufacturers that have close matches. We also love to use the Paslode HardieNail which is a screw nail combo and is designed specifically for James Hardie products. We are the only installer in Kansas City using them!
On this siding installation in Lees Summit, the home is in a lake community and it was important to incorporate that look and feel into the product and color selection. The client gave us a lot of liberty to make decisions on final design based on our experience and they were thrilled with the end result. We added some WoodTone stained look siding to the gable above the garage which really grabs your attention when you are pulling into their driveway. We also added some to the entryway when walking into the home. It really feels like you are escaping to your lake house everytime you walk in the front door!
